Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to become a member of NNEPI to obtain electrical service?
Yes. NNEPI authorizes Manitoba Hydro when a leaseholder has paid for electrical service. Manitoba Hydro will not hook up a property unless NNEPI authorizes it.
What is the cost to obtain electrical service?
All leaseholders pay the same price upfront to obtain hydro: $10,355.91, which includes GST.
In addition, there is an annual interest carrying charge assessed on your primary residence Hydro bill annually each September.
As of August 31, 2024 the annual carrying charge is $152.00. As additional cottage owners obtain electrical service this amount will reduce. It will become nil when the NNEPI debt to Manitoba Hydro is repaid.
Is financing available?
Yes. Manitoba Hydro offers loans of up to $9,456.23. As of September 1, 2024 loans are available through the Customer Contribution Time Payment Plan to assist with the purchase of electrical service. Please refer to Manitoba Hydro web site under the above plan for current loan interest rates.
Contact Tim Loeb at Manitoba Hydro at 204-360-5157 cell 204-791-2822 or tloeb@hydro.mb.ca for a loan application.
If you choose to finance the maximum amount available, the remaining $899.68 needs to be sent to NNEPI.
What is the promissory note and why do I have to sign it?
By signing the promissory note, the leaseholder agrees to pay the annual interest carrying charge to Manitoba Hydro.
Two signed copies are required as NNEPI and Manitoba Hydro each retain a copy.
If I am a NNEPI member and am selling my property what do I need to do?
-
Arrange for the purchaser of your property to sign two copies of the promissory note and forward both original copies to NNEPI, along with the purchaser’s name, address, phone number and email address (if available). Unless the purchaser signs the promissory note you will continue to be assessed the annual interest carrying charge.
-
Contact a NNEPI Board member to advise of the ownership change. We can provide you or your lawyer with a copy of the promissory note.
-
Consider the annual interest carrying charge in your statement of adjustments on your purchase/sale agreement.
By signing the promissory note, the purchaser will now become responsible for the annual interest carrying charge assessed by Manitoba Hydro, as well as their share of the outstanding debt associated with the setup of electrical service, which we expect to be paid down by new members signing up for electrical service. The annual charge will be shown on the purchaser's September Manitoba Hydro invoice for their primary residence. This interest carrying charge covers the period September 1 - August 31 and is based on the number of NNEPI members at August 31 each year.
What if I plan to make my property my permanent residence?.
All leaseholders pay the same amount to obtain electrical service, regardless of whether a leaseholder is a permanent resident.
